Dialect contact occurs whenever speakers of mutually intelligible language varieties interact. Many linguists are interested in the outcome of such contact—how it leads people and languages to vary and change, and what such patterns can reveal about language, mind, and society. Dialect contact can thus be approached as an individual-level or a community-level phenomenon; a cognitive process or a social one. In Dialect Contact, international contributors present studies touching on both perspectives, representing languages and varieties spanning five continents.

In the last years the University of the Basque Country EHU, like most European Universities, has increased the offer of English Medium Instruction (EMI). However, as this is a relatively new situation we do not have much research analysing this matter and shedding light on the impact this may have on different aspects of the learning-teaching process. In this study, we compared EMI and BMI (Basque Medium Instruction) lessons from the faculty of Economics and Business focusing our attention on classroom interaction. The aim of the study was to examine whether the Medium of Instruction (MOI) and the teacher lecturing may affect students’ oral participation. Results revealed that the MOI did not seem to be a relevant factor when it came to interaction, as no significant differences were observed when comparing EMI and BMI lessons. These results were in line with previous studies (Ngussa, Citation2017; Serna-Bermejo & Lasagabaster, Citation2023). Nevertheless, teachers’ teaching style turned out to be a relevant aspect since it affected classroom interaction significantly. These findings are also in line with former research (Sánchez-García, Citation2016; Serna-Bermejo & Lasagabaster, Citation2023).

Ikerketaren objektua 90. hamarkadaz geroztik garatutako euskal soziolinguistika izan da, eta horretarako, gune zehatz bat hartu da azter eremu: Bat Soziolinguistika Aldizkaria. Aldizkariaren erradiografiak erakusten du, besteak beste, emakumeek soziolinguistikaren eremuan egindako bidea: artikulugile, koordinatzaile edo zuzendari gisa urtez urte irabazi duten pisua eta garrantzia.

Les sentències recents relatives a les exigències lingüístiques en els procediments selectius d’accés a la funció pública basca posen en evidència la debilitat de les bases normatives sobre les que s’assenta el model de normalització lingüística de l’eusquera a les administracions públiques locals, forals i autonòmiques. Si ens atenim a la jurisprudència, s’observa un tancament d’aquest model, que té com a referent la Sentència del Tribunal Constitucional (STC) 85/2023, de 5 de juliol (relativa a la Llei 2/2016, de 7 d’abril, d’institucions locals d’Euskadi) i la jurisprudència de la Secció Primera de la Sala Contenciosa Administrativa del Tribunal Superior de Justícia del País Basc (TSJPV), que, de manera sistemàtica, considera desproporcionada l’exigència de coneixement de la llengua basca en els procediments d’accés a l’ocupació pública basca. L’eusquera es troba davant un nou dilema. Aquest treball analitza la jurisprudència més recent sobre l’eusquera, proposa avançar cap a un nou model i apunta la conveniència d’una iniciativa legislativa que situï el coneixement de les llengües oficials en l’accés a la funció pública dins uns nous paràmetres.

In this article we reflect on the process used to create the website euskarakirolkide.eus, which emerged from an ethnographic study involving youth sports in the Basque Autonomous Community. The website documents some of the strategies used by sports clubs to promote the use of the Basque language not only within the clubs but also in the wider context of neighborhood and city, illustrating how the clubs serve as language agents by giving voice, body and materiality to their practices. The euskarakirolkide.eus website also details and exhibits the careful research process undertaken and the complex interplay between the  material and relational elements involved.              

 This article examines the impact of educational interventions on the development of informal discourse in Basque, a minority language in northern Spain and southern France. It explores how structured leisure, games, and recreational activities, both inside and outside the classroom, can serve as effective pedagogical tools and foster motivation and language attachment. Using a quantitative methodology, the study included fifth-grade primary school students from the Basque Autonomous Community (Bizkaia, Álava, and Gipuzkoa) and the Autonomous Community of Navarre (n = 208).
