A detailed academic treatise of the history of nationality in Tatarstan. The book demonstrates how state collapse and national revival influenced the divergence of worldviews among ex-Soviet people in Tatarstan, where a political movement for sovereignty (1986-2000) had significant social effects, most saliently, by increasing the domains where people speak the Tatar language and circulating ideas associated with Tatar culture. Also addresses the question of how Russian Muslims experience quotidian life in the post-Soviet period. The only book-length ethnography in English on Tatars, Russia's second most populous nation, and also the largest Muslim community in the Federation, offers a major contribution to our understanding of how and why nations form and how and why they matter - and the limits of their influence, in the Tatar case.

This book reassesses theoretical approaches to diglossia and code-switching in the light of empirical data from Egypt. The work is based on a corpus of monologues that includes political speeches, mosque sermons and university lectures.
Part one is a detailed analysis of the systems of negation, deixis, and mood marking in Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, with an emphasis on the occurrence and frequency of composite structures in empirical data.
This analysis provides the basis for an extensive reassessment of theoretical approaches to code-switching in part two; this reappraisal in turn leads to a thorough analysis of the function of code switching in the Egyptian speech community, and of the factors which influence code choice, such as role of the speaker, audience, and subject matter.

This comprehensive treatment of several phenomena in Distributed Morphology explores a number of topics of high relevance to current linguistic theory. It examines the structure of the syntactic and postsyntactic components of word formation, and the role of hierarchical, featural, and linear restrictions within the auxiliary systems of several varieties of Basque.
The postsyntactic component is modeled as a highly articulated system that accounts for what is shared and what exhibits variation across Basque dialects. The emphasis is on a principled ordering of postsyntactic operations based on their intrinsic properties, and on the relationship between representations in the Spellout component of grammar with other grammatical modules. The analyses in the book treat related phenomena in other languages and thereby have much to offer for a general morphology readership, as well as those interested in the syntax-morphology interface, the theory of Distributed Morphology, and Basque.

Die vorliegende Arbeit ist eine soziolinguistische Studie über Patwa, das jamaikanische Kreol. Um den Zusammenhang zwischen der Sprache und der ethnisch-kulturellen Identität seiner Sprecher herzustellen, wird zunächst ein historischer Überblick über die Entwicklung des Patwa im Speziellen sowie der Pidgin- und Kreolforschung im Allgemeinen gegeben. Der aktuelle Sprachstand wird unter Berücksichtigung des Sprachkontinuums und des Phänomens des Code-Switching dargestellt, wobei auch die fehlende Normierung und deren Auswirkungen auf das Bildungswesen und den alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch Beachtung findet. Der Hauptbestandteil der Arbeit widmet sich der sprachlichen Manifestation von Identität und untersucht dies u.a. anhand von sozialer Schließung, religiösen Gruppen sowie der internationalen Verwendung des Patwa in der Musikszene. Abschließend wird für eine Anerkennung der Eigenständigkeit des Patwa und damit einhergehend Jamaikas als bilinguale Nation plädiert.
